I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
by Maya Angelou
While I, of course, knew who Maya Angelou was, I didn’t know her story until this book. This book is a memoir of Maya’s childhood. Maya grew up in a poor, small town in Arkansas in the height of segregation. Her story has a lot of low points, from racism and sexual abuse, but despite it all, Maya’s intelligence and drive helps her to overcome and excel. This is a raw, emotional and inspiring story. I look forward to reading more of her memoirs and learning more about the rest of her life. If you have the opportunity to listen to this as an audiobook, I highly suggest doing so and listening to Maya tell the story herself.
