Frozen in Time by Ali Sparkes

3.75

Frozen in Time has a bit of a shaky plot if I'm honest, the basics of it are fine but the execution was sometimes lacking.  The science fiction part (cryonic suspension) was intriguing but the espionage failed to grip me at all.

That said, the plot is not really the point of this book - it is about watching two children from the 1950s adapt to being in the 2000s, and this was handled really well. The author has clearly put thought and research into differences between the time periods, from technology to fashion to language use.  Multiple times throughout the book the two children are challenged by their 21st century relatives (also children) for using outdated, offensive terminology in particular regarding race, as well as for their attitudes to gender roles.

Overall I enjoyed this book quite a bit, and I suspect had I read it when I was a preteen I might have really loved it.
