Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

2.0

I originally read this book back when I was in 7th-8th grade and remember it only as being a book I had liked with the fallen angel plot, a iron deficient FMC, and a smooth talking MMC.

Reading it now as an adult, I can say that my tween self definitely gave this a bit more credit than it’s actually probably worth. I still think the fallen angel plot is interesting; it’s just no where near as fleshed out and intricate as it could be.

On top of that, the FMC makes many questionable decisions and the MMC is described as being vaguely ominous and threatening throughout almost the entire book but somehow they just ✨work✨ and are in love at the end.

I’m a sucker for a dark fantasy romance so I like the concept here and the pacing of the writing did a good job of keeping intrigue but it just feels like some parts were too random and unnecessary, like the two-ish scenes with Marcie Millar. Fitzpatrick was definitely setting up for a sequel with bits like that, which I did also read as a youth (I remember even less about it than this first book) and do not have a desire to read again as an adult.

I also think the author did a good job of setting the scene, the dark/foggy/gray vibe felt consistent.

Overall, I give this 2 stars for the concept and nostalgia. I’d love to see a non-YA version of this that has more depth!
