Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology
by Danielle Binks
my opinions of the short stories:
one small step - bad, romance is hard to write in a short story because it needs time for the reader to get attached
i can see the ending - good, this was a romance too but because of the time travelling there was plenty of time to develop haha
in a heartbeat - good, liked the portrayal of relationship between the asian mum and her daughter. racism and tactlessness of the asian mum but also the infinite love was a bit too on point.
first casualty - don't really know what the title means. the first casualty of war is always the innocent?? now that i think about it i think i know what the title means.
sundays - bad, it was cute but again romance needs length
missing persons - really annoying because the protagonist does not know what agoraphobia is. i sound pretentious because i am.
oona underground - actually really loved it, and the friends to lovers arc was actually good? plus the fantasy fairytale element was fun to read
the feeling from over here - boring, a very forgettable and meandering story. title is confusing but i did appreciate the canberra references, love the jolimont centre. murrays coaches are iconic.
last night at the mount solemn observatory - meh but it was pretty unique and i liked how realistic it felt with the end of high school and the start of a new chapter, hopeful and scary and unknown
competition entry #349 - fantastic. fun fact, this is actually the second time i've read this book but the i only thing i remembered was this short story and the wrong definition of agoraphobia. i also remembered a bit of i can see the ending (love u will kostakis i still remember ur visit) but the point is how good this short story is. it was actually memorable.
overall, it doesn't matter what i say all those stories are good and aussie ya is underappreciated.
