Das zweite Königreich by Rebecca Gablé
5.0

*squeeeeeee* This book is awesome!

I love it. Rebecca Gablé has such a unique gift to make history interesting, exciting and entertaining so that it's hard to put the book down and stop reading for whatever reason. I could have read more than the ~870 pages about all these characters. I've been laughing, crying, scared, hurting, despairing and happy with these characters. ♥

I don't know much about the english history and therefore I'm not able to say anything regarding the accuracy of the historical events and people in this novel. Just, I feel like I've broaden my mind with this book. That I learned something. And this feeling? Can't be described and put into words.

I adore Cædmon. From the first page on I've been captured by this character and even when I didn't agree with some of his choices (Aliesa and everything that happened because of that) - I've been rooting for him and suffered through everything with him. To be in his place? An unbearable thought.

This book has a big cast of main and supporting characters. I love them all. The "good" and the "bad" and the "grey" ones. The ones who are only mentioned and never show up again. The ones who stayed with Cædmon for years. I love them. I love them so much.

Even though this is only my second novel by Rebecca Gablé I noticed two things that I really love:

1) There are gay characters. In this case it's been a historical person of which there are records about their homosexuality but it still could have been easily kept quiet and everything. But here? The brother of the main character is the lover of said historical figure. Rebecca Gablé didn't have to do that. But she did. And that's awesome.

2) The main character (Cædmon in this case) doesn't die (yes, a lot of others die and some deaths really hurt (Etienne)). Not even of old age. The book ends on a happy note and you can imagine your characters (that survived that long) being happy and content and just die of old age some time in the future. I love that so much.

In short - I really, really, really loved this book and it won't be my last one by Rebecca Gablé.
