I went into this book having limited exposure to the Moomins. I've seen the first chunk of episodes of the animated 90s show, read a few of the comic strips, and seen a stop-motion film adaptation. I had read none of the books and did not realize this was the last in the series until I was finished. It was a bit disorienting as there were several characters I didn't know, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. However, my rating would likely improve with better context.

I think I'd like to go back and read the whole series, but I'm having some trouble getting my hands on them here. I think the context of the series ending is important. I also found out when reading up on the book that this was written soon after the author's mother's death. Knowing that information immediately puts the book into crystal clear focus and it's truly a beautiful expression of grief - specifically focusing on fear and letting go.
