Well, I can definitely understand why Rice hated the movie adaptation. This is a completely different story in which nobody is heterosexual, and the movie... well. It was something else.
This was a very ambitious attempt at defending the inherent value of humanity in the face of eternity, and I personally would have been happier with an abridged version of the origins of vampires. This book was about 60% lore, 30% existential angst and 10% genocide and general murder behaviour, and it would have been more engaging if the percentages had been a little more even.
I don't feel particularly compelled to continue the series now that I know what all that was about and I've read my physical copies. Maybe I'll change my mind at some point.
