The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness
4.0

I haven’t read reviews so this may be redundant— liked this book and the character development. Sometimes it was hard to follow names, but with all of the characters in this story, it’s amazing how the author brings them to life that I could recall ~10 immediately.

On the other hand, this book’s plot centers, in part, on the bad guy and his raping of witches. The rape was glossed over by the characters and referenced in a joking manner at times—despite the graphic truly awful nature of it, and the victims were referred to repeatedly as “Benjamin’s witch.” It was gross and I was hoping it’d be corrected later in the writing but it wasn’t. There was just a general avoidance to extend meaningful empathy towards the women raped and videoed — and then the next scene would be something random like the house playing funny music while MCs joke around. It was weird and I made me skeptical of the writing as a whole.
