A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

adventurous emotional medium-paced
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
Number rating withheld due to a handful of passages that, despite feeling quite unnecessary, also supported racist stereotypes that had no place. My understanding is that Novik plans to rewrite those segments and remove the language, but until then, I won't be putting a number rating on this. Seeing these passages was disappointing in an otherwise beautiful story about privilege, the assumptions we make about people, and the literal monsters we subject them to when we put the survival of our own over theirs. When the edits are published, I'll add to this review in light of that.
