“Not everyone who says ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven…And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you: depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ -Jesus (Matthew 7:21-23)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” -Jesus (John 3:3)
Even though Rob Bell claims to not be a Universalist, this book would say otherwise. While I do not agree with a lot of what he said in this book, he made some pretty fair points and the book was an encouraging read in some parts. People are constantly having to deconstruct the things they have been taught in church. In my opinion, this view of God, however, is a small one. God is so much bigger. He is the creator of the Universe and deserves praise. “Woe is me” to be in the presence of God. Yes, he is loving and corrects, but I believe this book will lead several to a false sense of security. The plan for this world is far bigger than we know. Wrapping our minds with “me-centered” ideologies will only fail us.
“Behold, the wicked man conceives evil and is pregnant with mischief and gives birth to lies. He makes a pit, digging it out, and falls into the hole that he has made” Psalm 7:14-15
But at the end of the day, if this book changes the lives of nonbelievers and even believers giving them faith in God, I’m totally okay with this book existing. If anyone reads this book who struggles with understanding God’s love for his creation, then decides to follow Jesus, Praise God. But always praise be to God. “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” Psalm 33:8-9
