Sick Day by Kay Oliver

4.0

This was a fun horror short story! It's about an 11 year old boy who pretends to be sick in order to stay home and since this takes place in the '90s the mother is a-okay with it. While he enjoys the freedoms of being home alone, he encounters an unexpected visitor who has bad intentions.

This is full of nostalgia, with many references to '90s entertainment and slang. I will say the first half is a bit slower but once you get to almost the middle, things get very creepy, bloody and thrilling. I really enjoyed the suspense and the quintessential masked killer slasher scenes. Classic.

I also liked the reveals and the ending a lot--it went a route I wasn't expecting. Great quick read.

There are CWs so DM if you want to know them.

Thank you to the author for an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
