Horizon by Barry Lopez
5.0

It took me over a year to read this book. Which says nothing about the quality of the writing or the ideas found within, other than perhaps that Barry’s field notes and poetic wonderings (wanderings) take time to digest.

The way that Barry thinks about the things, places and people he interacts with - with depth, historical context, anecdotal liaison and prismatic pondering - has completely inspired me to more actively use my mind as I travel and look at the world. He makes me want to understand the world’s history, the story of humanity, the story of the earth and how our great monuments and landscapes and ruins came to be. I think he has forever changed what I think and feel when I look at just about anything that has a biological or anthropogenic history (a tree, a bird, a church, a map, a coin…).

I would say this is not an easy book to read. But it is very worthwhile, and I am looking forward to reading another of his books as soon as I can get me hands on one.
