My roommate let me borrow this and I was absolutely blown away! If I could rate this book higher than a 5/5 I would because it was a masterpiece and a masterclass in how to create unique lore/concept with classic motifs. Vampires have been done to death at this point but Schwab gave it a refreshing new take! They are born from the midnight soil, sounds so poetic and ominous.
I loved how she introduced how the world and rules of this world works through the characters. We are learning as they are learning them.

The concept of vampires slowly rotting away from the inside/losing emotions and feelings from their humanity little by little until all they feel is hunger and how some last longer than others has to my favorite part.

Sabine, Lottie, and Alice are all completely different characters though they all have one thing in common: they strive for freedom and will do whatever it takes to get it. They all wanted  to love and to be loved. All their perspectives and stories were so captivating. I never tired of any one of them.

Sabine is a tragic character. She was controlling, manipulative, and vain yet all she wanted was love. She was evil to say the least but I didn’t hate her. I thought her encounters with other vampires was interesting and brought so much depth to her character.

Lottie was kinder than Sabine but still cruel. She killed hundreds of people to feed and lied to Alice just so she could get rid of Sabine for her. I thought her history with Jocelyn was sad but her being able to meet her again decades later was a great end to their story together.

Alice. Poor Alice. She was just trying to have a good time and she ends up getting tangled up in this mess. Her and Catty’s relationship had to be the saddest one. Catty was someone she always wanted to be and in the end, she left her. I wish we got to see what happened after Alice killed both Sabine and Lottie and how she was faring as a vampire in Boston. What is she going to do about college? What about Erza?

To conclude, everyone needs to read this. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
