Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind
by Vasanti Phadke, Jeffrey Keeten, Yuval Noah Harari
Really interesting. I don't know that I learned a ton about history or science, but it's mostly about philosophy and social structures. Lots of musings on the power of our collective imagination to bring vast numbers of humans together to achieve things like civilization, religions, empires, capitalism, and other ideologies. It ends sort of existentially - what is the point of humanity? Have we lessened the amount of suffering in the world, or only increased it? Will we be deliberate about the future and ask ourselves 'what do we want to want?' before we engineer the AI or cyborgs that will be so evolutionarily above us as we are from apes?
