Unearthed by Meagan Spooner, Amie Kaufman
5.0

Amie Kaufman. Every single time I read one of her books it solidifies her position of one of my favorite authors of all time. The only books by Meagan Spooner I've read were cowritten by Amie, so I can only speak of her books written as part of this duo, but I've loved all of them so far. I didn't love this quite as much as the Starbound trilogy (yet! I haven't read the second one yet) but I did really love it.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed a male character's POV as much as I did Jules's. He was funny and instantly likeable--honestly I liked him faster than I did Mia, which never happens to me. I love them both equally now, and that's perfect because when you really love both characters, the POV switching is less jarring. In fact, it was barely noticable on this one. They fit together so perfectly that I never really needed to adjust to a POV switch.
Oh my god the slow, gentle romance!!! Both of them being like "now is not the time for me to develop feelings" and "I should not have feelings for this person, it could never work. Them slowly learning (and relearning) to truly trust each other. Starting to hold hands while they run for their lives. Jules blowing on her freezing fingers!!!!! I don't know why that soft little moment knocked me dead but it DID. It just felt like such a pure, gentle, loving little thing to do.
I did see most of the plot twists that happened along the way coming, but the final one? I did not see that coming and I'm so excited to read the second book.
