Split Second
by David Baldacci
Phew, this book took forever to get through! Part of that is because I was reading this alongside my husband, so we sneak in reading time when we can. But mostly it's because Baldacci's books are just so damn long! They're great, and this book was no exception, but I feel like they would benefit from some trimming.
This isn't some great literary novel and it isn't terribly deep, but it is (as are his other books) very well-researched and well-written. The twists at the end are surprising and caught me off guard. He dropped clues throughout the book to lead me to guess half of the ending. But in focusing on that, he managed to completely throw me off with the remainder of the ending.
I did really enjoy that one of the protagonists is a woman and a strong, independent woman at that. He doesn't include her only as a potential love interest to the male protagonist. Michelle Maxwell is as accomplished as they come and she stands on her own. Sure, Sean's thoughts show that there might be some interest there in the future, and there are definitely hints as to a future for the two of them, but it doesn't develop into that in this book and I greatly appreciate that.
If you like political thrillers/mysteries, this series is for you!
