kerryann 's review for:
My Absolute Darling
by Gabriel Tallent
outstanding
Trigger warning: This book tackles child abuse and incest.
The quick take, merge Educated and Where the Crawdads Sing and set them aside because this book is so much better and that is saying something.
What I liked about this book? This book is about survival. This book paints an extremely realistic look at a feral childhood, a feral childhood with a father who did it all wrong and claimed it was love-- basically her dad was a predator.
My review will not capture how much I loved reading about the natural world, the alienation of the protaganist and the steely strength she had. Her evolution, her motivations, her choices held my interest and at the end of this book I ended up gifting copies to two of my girlfriends that I felt could get past the triggers of abuse and incest to take the story on.
Another thing I liked about this book is the main character always surprised me. Her choices were amazing, I felt like I could predict what she would do next and I could not. This is not a spoiler, this is just a little detail that will not make sense to you until you read it, but the bit about the cast iron pan and how she claimed it was EVERYTHING that makes this book beautiful.
I love this book ---it is the best book I read this year. I found it on BookBub for $1.99 but I happily paid full price as gifts for my friends. So good if you are not faint of heart.
