I’m so happy I finally got around to reading this. Everything worked for me: the writing, pacing, character development, the stakes. It reminded me of The Last of Us meets Station Eleven, but treated the zombies much more as a backdrop and not a driving force.
This is a sort of coming of age, but brutal and bleak. You follow the main character, Temple, and her companion, Maury, for the majority of the book, winding through the US. They encounter different communities, enemies, and hopes for a better world. It all reaches a breaking point at the end, which ended exactly as it should have.
I’m excited to read the second one.
