An incredibly fun read. Nearly every major character is lovable in their own way without becoming saccharine. The converging character arcs for Vin & Kelsier are some of the best I've ever read. The worldbuilding is a bit shallow at times - the "Final Empire" is about as cliche a name as you can get, and the class divides are a bit blunt (the nobles spend nearly all their time at parties*) - and the story can feel a bit slow in parts, but the magic system and character interactions are so well conveyed that neither issue significantly impacts the overall quality of the book. The last Act (kind of, the structure gets a bit wonky at the end, but in a good way) somehow never runs out of twists, turns, and
'darkest moments'
over the final 150 or so pages, and kicks off with one of the single greatest fight scenes in any novel.

*On second thought, the reality of upper class plantation farmers in the US was to start drinking around noon for lack of actual work to do, so I retract this criticism.
