A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon
by Sarah Hawley
4.5/5 stars!
This is one of these books where I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or not. But I have been in such a autumn mood I really wanted to read something supernatural but not really a dark urban fantasy or just plain fantasy but something in the middle and these contemporary fantasies are not my usual. I got this book and the second one in the series together with really the intention of wanting to read the second as it appealed to me a bit more but as I started reading the sequel I realised the stories you had to read them in order.
I honestly maybe wasn’t too sure at first but I really loved the writing style. It reminds me of Lucy Scores Knoxville series it has a small town that feels so alive and kicking you feel like the place is real, rich characters with a range of different personalities even side characters like e.g Rani being a dryad nymph mermaid. The description of Glimmer Falls and its fountains with mermaids, the forests with different insects and a beautiful waterfall everything felt so alive like I could almost feel it. On top the book was absolutely hilarious.
I’m not a massive fan of ‘quirky’ humour especially in romance, I can find it a bit cringe like Ali Hazlewood books it’s just too cringe for me. I felt like this was perfect and my sort of humour I found it laugh out loud funny. Even mean characters like Mariels mother who was a fabulous villain who makes everything into a brag and has no social filter of what’s appropriate or not she was a character I loved to hate! Her and Cynthia who spoke with pure venom when they sparred it was hilarious.
I also wasn’t sure about the romance to begin with as I’m normally a bit toxic I love my dark romance, enemies to lovers and struggle love where this romance was as wholesome as it gets but the passion I felt through the pages. It did have some forbidden moments as Oz is immortal and Mariel isn’t and plus he has to take her soul and all that! But I loved them so much together. This book had the right amount of spicy moments. It wasn’t slow burn and I’m normally not interested when characters get together so quickly but this was so romantic. Every character in this book I just adored and I just need more!
This book just has perfect autumn vibes and is set in October and features and the Autumn Festival so it’s perfect if you need that fall/autumn fix. I can’t wait to read the sequel Astaroth…omg I can’t wait!
