family drama, mentions of addiction

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Liam’ life is all about football: he lives and breathes it, wakes up with the determination of few boys his age could be able to. But football is a villain in his story so far: he wasn’t able to make his high school team proud, always captaining the losing team in the rivals’ game as the quarterback. College so far hasn’t been the fresh start he craved: as infamy isn’t easily forgotten—especially when everyone knows his twin sister is dating his biggest rival. Constant reminders them and the divide they caused puts him on edge about Alleghany. Especially when he’s stuck spending a weekend sleeping across the hall from Natalie Jacobs, after meeting up at chance encounters through summer. The popular, pretty blonde didn’t just celebrate each of his defeats—she was the cheer captain in Alleghany. Too bad, the last girl who should pique his interest is also the only one who ever has.
Natalie summer is filled with family drama due to her parents ropey marriage. Spending the 4th of July out of town seems like a great idea. What’s unexpected? Coming face-to-face with Glenmont’s infamous former quarterback. Not-so affectionately known as Sergeant, Liam is still stoic, a serious rule-follower, with a charismatic smile and intriguing body.
Luckily, the one thing both of them agree on is the rivalry between the hometowns isn’t a surpassable boundary. Should they cross it, it would only be for now…not forever.

REVIEW:

It seems like I’m letting myself into the deep end of the college romance trope - not one bit mad about it.
The story of Liam and Natalie was somewhat surprising, with them being so young and having to be mature at the same time. They’re attending college summer parties, while having to deal with difficult family drama at home. Liam’s sister is dating Natalie’s former fling, their schools and friend circles seem to be mortal enemies, and both of them feel lonely amongst all the noise. The Romeo & Juliet story of Maeve and Wes was/is a catalyst for their shared interactions, however secret their affection should be. I enjoyed that they brought out the best from one another, they shared secrects and jokes no other person in their lives was entitled to. The snarky, rivalry-based banter and sweet moments were perfectly sprinkled with serious topics and hard truths and dealig with toxicity. The angst of what ifs...? was relatable and carried the momentum in the story forward.
