By the end, I saw this as more of a chronology and evolution of cults and our understanding of them. Starting with what we see as obvious, Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate, to the more inconspicuous, MLMs and fitness cults. And ending with the current threat of social media cults that slowly indoctrinate. Anyone nowadays can be a self titled prophet and gain a following that lives and dies by their “insights”.
Amanda writes in a way that is entertaining without losing the weight of the subject matter. I feel a stronger awareness after finishing not only this book, but also “Wordslut” and “The Magical Age of Overthinking”. I recommend reading anything written by Amanda Montell!
