Becoming Beauvoir: A Life by Kate Kirkpatrick

Geen idee waarom ik deze biografie zo lang heb laten liggen. Ik heb intens genoten van elke zin.
De filosofie van De Beauvoir is nog steeds zó actueel. Haar visie op ouderdom, de positie van vrouwen en identiteit zijn hier een voorbeeld van. Jammer dat ze jarenlang is weggezet als "het liefje van Sartre" terwijl ze zo veel heeft geschreven en gedaan voor vrouwen - en ook voor het werk van Sartre.
Kirckpatrick zegt het volgende over De Beauvoir in het nawoord:
" Her life is a testament to double standards that beset women in the 'feminine condition', and especially to the ways that woman are punished when they dare to speak the truth as they see it - when they claim the power of being the 'eye that sees'and to find men's action wanting" (397).
Een ander treffende passage vond ik:
"When Beauvoir looked at history she saw that human beings have a habit of looking at others' bodies and creating castes, sometimes slave castes, based on their physical characteristics. No one doubted that this was true in the case of race. But, Beauvoir asked, what about sex? She argued that men have defined women as 'other' and relegated them to the status of a different caste: the second sex" .
Tenslotte nog een citaat over het zelf om over na te denken:
" From within Beauvoir saw herself as a becoming that never stopped. She didn't believe that any single point in her left showed 'the' Simone de Beauvoir because 'there is no instant in a life where all moments are reconciled (...) Time passes; dreams change; and the self is always beyond reach" (402).
