The Crimson Moth by Kristen Ciccarelli
adventurous
dark
emotional
mysterious
sad
3.5
I liked this book a fair bit more than "Half a Soul", which I read right before/simultaneously. It might be unfair to compare them, but The Crimson Moth had a noticeably richer fantasy world, the characters were more fleshed out, the plot was more interesting, and the writing felt more vivid. It was generally just a more interesting book, in my opinion.
However, there were a few things that annoyed me with this book:
The love triangle tendencies (one girl, two brothers. Oh, no!).
No, thank you.
The emphasis on "the size difference", "the sheer size of him", how much much larger he is than her.
Cringe.
Also, their connection was very sexual (even though there was only one sex scene, and it was slightly vague. Probably because it's YA). Idk, it just made me roll my eyes a few times.
I suspect that the target audience (16 year old girls?) won't necessarily mind these things, but they did bother meπ
To top it off, I realized halfway through the book, that it wasn't a standalone. (Silly me should have known!)
Surprisingly, the ending really pulled this book together for me.
It was gripping, twisty, and honestly β a bit of a gut punch. Yes, you have to continue the series to know how things turn out, but it was still pretty satisfying.
So mayyyybe I'll continue the series when the next book comes out. We'll se:)
