The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai

5.0

If you liked Pachinko from Min Jin Lee, you will most definitely love The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai.

The Mountains Sing was a particularly emotional read for me. It is an intimate story about war, hunger, and death. But also about hope, hardship, love, family and resilience - one lived by too many Vietnamese during the 20th century.

With her beautiful prose, Quế Mai invites us to see further than what Western history and retellings told us about the Vietnam Great Hunger, Land Reform and wars. She opens our eyes instead to the story of individuals filled with humanity, pride and love. Love for their country, land, beliefs, practices and customs.

The Mountains Sing struck a chord with me: I could see my family through the characters in the book. I saw myself retracing the thread of what could have possibly been their stories, experiences and memories. This novel is one that made me understand what my family went through during the Vietnam War and its impact on them. One that pushes me to know more about my family and my heritage.
