Update after 2025 reread:
Every time I read this book I am struck anew by the pacing. The Games starts so late here (part three) but even though “nothing” happens before then, every moment is so deeply integral to everything that will come after. It reminds me for the millionth time why I don’t believe in DNFing, because the slow burn of parts one and two is so worth it for the pay-off to become. I love this series so so much.
Update after 2020 reread:
I still adore this book.
Original review (2012):
I adore this book. Quite honestly, I was iffy on the series after the first one: a fan, but not blown away, and a little curious as to why so many people were so much in awe of the trilogy, because it just seemed really good, not awe-worthy, not the kind of book you can't put down. After this...I understand it all. There were a handful of moments in here where I finished reading and had literally forgotten that I was sitting in the real world reading a book and not caught inside this world. To me, that is the mark of a GREAT book. To anyone who hasn't read this book or the first in the trilogy yet: GO READ NOW!
