The Maid's Diary
by Loreth Anne White
The Maid's Diary is a psychological thriller that grips you and doesn’t let go. The novel follows the journey of a maid who uncovers chilling truths about her employers while navigating a twisted web of betrayal, deceit, and revenge. The writing is engaging, and the author does an excellent job of building tension and keeping you on edge. The atmosphere of the story is dark and foreboding, perfectly complementing the psychological drama. The pacing is steady, and the plot constantly keeps you guessing, with a few well-executed surprises.
However, while I found the story compelling, one major aspect of the book left me unsettled—the protagonist's pursuit of revenge. Without giving away too many spoilers, I’ll say that I struggled with how the main character chose to enact her vengeance. At some points, her actions felt overly extreme and, in my opinion, veered too far from the idea of justice. It raised the moral question of whether "an eye for an eye" is ever truly justified, especially when it results in further harm. The idea of balancing right and wrong becomes blurred, and it is hard to reconcile the lengths the character went to to seek retribution.
In conclusion, The Maid's Diary is a gripping, tension-filled read with a complex, well-written plot. While the protagonist's moral choices may leave some readers questioning her methods, it’s still intriguing for fans of dark thrillers who enjoy stories exploring revenge's consequences. Just be prepared for a story that challenges the idea that two wrongs can ever make a right.
