The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
3.25
This book gave me a new perspective on the US; I didn’t even know reservations were still a thing! I always kind of assumed Native Americans just lived in everyday society, just with their own traditions and religion still intact. I’m going to try to learn more about this, because I genuinely thought reservations were no longer existing.
The book is very real and honest, which means there is also vulgarity and inappropriate content. There is a section in the back of the back talking about the fact that this book was apparrantly banned in some school libraries, and honestly… I get it. I don’t think the author should have censored these books, because the uncensored view is kind of the point. But I also think parents should have the right to choose whether or not they want their children to be confronted with talk about boners and sex. So I get why the book was banned in some school libraries. The author also makes a couple of statements about how children aren’t as innocent as we think they are, so trying to shield them isn’t necessary. That’s an interesting take, too, but at the end of the day the interview at the back isn’t the book itself, so I’m going to leave it at that.
