Utter perfection. I’m still struggling to adequately articulate my feelings on paper, but this book blew me away.
There is a certain formula that works very well within fantasy romance books, and Callie Hart took that formula, and then multiplied it by 100.
I annotated the hell out of this book, saving my favourite quotes and moments along the way, because I knew straight away it was something I wanted to savour and fully immerse myself into.
Where do I start?!
Ok, the plot was excellent. We have our sassy, sarcastic human thief, Saeris, who lives in a world that rations water and food and all our usual human necessities. Saeris is caught stealing part of the guards armour in order to trade it to help her friends and family survive, and is taken to the (evil AF) Queen for her punishment. Queenie tells her Captain to execute Saeris for being mouthy AF as well as stealing, and Saeris and Captain get into a brawl, resulting in Saeris being on deaths door. And who should pop up out of the pool of quicksilver, but our lad Kingfisher, with his bags of swagger, multiple chips on his shoulder and brooding as anything. Fisher takes Saeris back to his world, through the silver….
THE BANTER!!!! The interactions, not only between our two MCs, but every side character, was absolutely exquisite. I laughed out loud several times.
The found family aspect is one of my absolute favourites and this was a brilliant example of when it’s done well. The side characters are aaaall excellent, and all have a purpose. Carrion Swift, please give him his own book!!
Kingfisher. Must be protected at all costs. Book boyfriend goals. His beautiful, tortured little heart. My heart was in my throat every time we got more information about him, and I just needed to know more! I cried learning his truths!
The plot gave me major ACOWAR vibes. I was on the edge of my seat for the last 30% especially, reading with my hand over my eyes and/or mouth, with twist after twist and epic reveals, there was not a single moment where my mind wandered.
This is the perfect escapism you need in your life. If you’re still chasing the high after finishing your favourite fantasy series, this one will sort you out.
Fantastic and brilliant, this story has cemented itself in my favourite fantasy reads of all time.
Thank you Callie Hart! I’ll be (not so) patiently awaiting the next instalment!
