What I Saw and How I Lied
by Judy Blundell
I picked this up on a whim at a library book sale. I had never heard of Judy Blundell, but the title may have been vaguely familiar, and the premise sounded interesting enough.
This week, I plucked it off my shelf and noticed the blurb said Judy Blundell had written tons of books under a pseudonym..... which turned out to be JUDE WATSON. I swear, my subconscious must have known I would want this book, written by the author of all the beloved Jedi Apprentice and Jedi Quest books (and more).
I can see why this went under a different name, as it wasn't her usual fare - definitely darker and grittier. I enjoyed the atmosphere, and the constant twists and questions were intriguing. I think it's cool that she set it just post-war, and that she studied about Palm Beach and actually incorporated a 1947 hurricane that hit the area. I learned a lot, too - I had no idea that in that period certain establishments were still allowed to bar Black or Jewish people entirely (it sounded like they were banned from getting housing in that area too). I still don't know if it was a law, or just an unwritten rule everyone enforced. Gross, either way.
