"The masses never revolt of their own accord, and they never revolt merely because they are oppressed. Indeed, so long as they are not permitted to have standards of comparison, they never even become aware that they are oppressed."
I just read an article from The Guardian saying that this book was inspired by the meeting of the Allied Leaders at the Tehran conference toward the end of World War 2 where Orwell was convinced that Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt consciously plotted to divide the world.
This made the book more haunting for me. It was haunting but brilliantly imagined. A world where individualism and eccentricity are a crime.
I really can't imagine living in a world like this, where your every move is being watched, your routines, your facial expressions. Hell, even the words you say in your sleep can make you imprisoned. A world where the past is changing, day by day, minute by minute, where the language is being destroyed, a State who's trying to kill human's sex instinct. At first, the purpose of these types of control did not make sense to me but after some time, I realized that they were dreadfully genius. They can really destroy a person's mind this way.
While this isn't a perfect book, the characters are so dull, the love story came out of nowhere and Goldstein's book in the middle part is really chunky, these did not stop the book from being relevant. I believe everyone should read this.
