I wish we all were a bit more like Patti Smith. My favourite thing about her is that she doesn’t seem to judge herself, which is so humbling. I get the feeling that she’s not the kind of person who would make art to prove a point but to connect with art. That means connecting with dreams and the dead and objects and animals. And that means talking to them as well. She’s spiritual, superstitious, magical. She’s Japan, Mexico, Dazai, Frida, Bolaño. And she’s funny too. I also think I read this book at the perfect time. I borrowed it from the library on a Friday and spent the entire weekend alone reading it.
