4.0

In the end I was pleasantly surprised to give this 4/5. Perhaps its late redemption was apt for the religious setting of the book. The first two-thirds of it were bogged down with things I have absolutely no interest in - the Catholic Church and (to borrow from Paul Simon) a Mother and Child reunion.  I came VERY close to dropping the book, which would have been a first for a series I was really enjoying.

However, the final third reverted to form (again apt given the role betting plays in the story). The unravelling of the actual murder was Cross at his neurodivergent best, and the multiple kinks in the tale of the tail made up for the tedious emotive baggage of the first half.
