The Worldship Humility
by R.R. Haywood
I'll be honest, Sci-fi is not one of my main genres and I've never used audible before; I don't do well with audiobooks since I get mentally distracted very easily (and this book is quite long!), but I learnt of this book because my favourite actor narrated it and with him being a very talented voice actor, I knew this would be worth purchasing and listening to. I was worried it would be very hard for me to follow along with the story with my lack of concentration skills, but the best part was that this story ended up truly enticing me, making it easy to follow along. I am still going to purchase the physical copy, however, as I understand stories a lot better when I read them for myself, so this review is based on the audiobook alone.
The world building was fantastic, and most of all, the characters were truly *so* relatable. I am really enjoying seeing more woman of color in the lead roles of sci-fi and fantasy, and Yasmine was a truly exceptional character. Strong but incredibly flawed. The dynamic between Sam and Yasmine was swoon-worthy, I'd find myself gushing and making faces at all of their cute scenes, and just ahhh it was all so precious. Penny and Chang were another great dynamic. Janey(?) and Sven had more of a friendship dynamic, which I truly adored. I have such a soft spot for Janey, and I think that was one thing I wish was touched on more, since her storyline ended a bit abruptly, but I know this is a trilogy, so I'm sure she'll be back. The best scene in this audiobook was *that* scene after Janey learns of Yasmine's true intentions. The emotional intensity of the dialogue and the desperation seeping through with the narration of Colin's acting, peaking with knee-slapping humor and a sweet moment at the end, was astonishing. The raw emotion was felt at every moment. There was a lot of witty banter in this book too, and a lot of laugh out loud scenes that had me wondering how Colin and Leo kept a straight face in the audio booth during those. The story of the heist itself was a little lost on me, but I am sure I will understand it a lot more once I can read the physical book.
As for Colin's narration, since this is an audible exclusive after all, what can I say? This was by far his BEST voice acting, which is saying something. Hearing all of the different accents and intonations he did with these characters was truly so enjoyable, and I had to pause the book on several occasions due to my intense giggling. I can only imagine the amount of dedicated weeks and months put into doing all of these. Haywood's humor is right on point, and it comes through in the way he writes the dialogue and the way that Colin delivers it.
Whether or not Colin narrates the rest of the trilogy, I will definitely be reading them and am looking forward to it!
