Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

3.0

I thought the book was good and enjoyable.

The character development was a hit or miss, depending on who you were rooting for. I enjoyed Amari's development and I hope her actions will be reflected in the third book and we see a more mature princess. I thought she was a pretty bland character in the first book, so seeing her take risks and seeing those consequences for her poor actions made her have flavor. It showed she can also make terrible choices, which is a treat to see when she always does good.

Zelie was still a little lackluster imo. She always thought she was the one suffering when in reality, everyone is suffering. I get we're supposed to feel for her but I felt a little annoyed. She needs to realize that just because you're the chosen one, doesn't mean you get to act like everything revolves around you. Use your strengths and gifts to protect others, not mope around and cry every second.

Inan's development was definitely interesting. He changed and I think it was nice to see a good change within a character that we thought was completely evil. I guess it shows he has a heart. Should there have been more development? Sure, but overall it was okay.

The plot itself wasn't terrible but it wasn't new either. The worldbuilding was great and I love that we got to see more of their world, magic, and history with the people. The book revolved around a lot of fighting and a lot of "down with the monarchy!" vibes. Again, nothing new but it wasn't terrible.

I say if you enjoy a new magic system and a new world, then continue to read this series.
