This is a graphic novel that’s a blend of memoir and fiction. The artwork is very cute.

Vera is 9 and headed to a Russian camp in CT. It’s her first time at camp and she just wants to fit in. She gets assigned to share a tent with two 14 year old girls. Vera does not fit in with these girls.

I was reading this with my 8 year old son (who loves graphic novels) and I had to glean over some parts (maxi-pads under a bed, a girl’s period-stained panties being hung on a flag pole, some kids calling another kid “tit head”) because I didn’t feel like diving deep into all that with my son at bedtime.

The overall story arc was good and age appropriate with a lesson about being yourself and finding true friends.
