A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
by Ishmael Beah
this book was heartbreaking to say the least. it was very difficult to read about so much horror in a young boy's life. but i do wish there was more at the end. i wanted to know more and the story seemed a bit truncated. however, the point of the book, in my opinion was more to show that it was possible for these boy soldiers to be rehabilitated, which gives the reader some hope, and also to shed some light on his country's conflict. it shows how survival will make people into anything, depending on their circumstance. and how he learned, through rehabilitation that his war acts were the same as the ones who killed his family, which - combined with hunger, fear, and a lack of options - fueled his fire to become just like the people he loathed and feared. the story is about resilience and survival and one can't help but wonder why so many people go through so many atrocities and while we basically live a life of privilege, blissfully ignorant of a country being torn apart and bloodied by a gruesome civil war.
