Smoke and Shadow by Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, Gene Luen Yang

5.0

Wow! This one is easily my favorite so far. It was great to see Mai and Ty Lee again, and Kei Lo made a wonderful addition to the team. We get some spirit world action, which is always welcome, and we also get to explore family dynamics with both Mai and Ursa. The balance of humor, drama, and mystery in this arc was impressively well balanced. Bravo to everyone who put work into this novel!

This was a timely read as well, given how the story of Zuko trying to protect his citizens seemed exceptionally prevalent in the world of coronavirus.

"Security and freedom exist in a delicate balance."

I'm going through this series like fun-sized candy, but I think Smoke and Shadow is going to hold a top spot among them.
