It’s a pretty sparkling recommendation when you can finish a book of this size in three days. For a book of this size it really does manage to capture and hold your attention as it shifts from character to character. Admittedly, this is my first story from Liane Moriarty book and so I didn’t know what to expect. This book was so compelling and did pose a really question about mortality and fate.

I think that the different characters let the reader examine their beliefs and opinions about whether their deaths are predetermined or changeable. The character of Cherry was also written very interestingly. While never expressly stated to be neurodivergent, there were clues in her characterization and stylistic choices that made me wonder if that was the author’s intent.

The only qualm I had with the book is that the scale was almost too large for every character to fully be fleshed out. A plane as a setting for the beginning scène was a good choice, but it created too many characters who only appeared once or twice again to little impact, like the pregnant woman or the little boy travelling alone or the Chris Hemsworth lookalike. It feels like they were distracting, as I was waiting for them to have more significance or reappear later in the story.

I do believe that the accolades and 2024 awards the book has won have all been merited and would definitely give this book a wholehearted recommendation. 4.5/5 stars.
