Moon Called
by Patricia Briggs
So this is the first book of the Mercy Th0mpson series and while initially skeptical, to a degree, I fell in love with this book. It took a few chapters but once it hit its stride I was more involved, loving some of the more intricate parts of the story. It was focused a lot more on compassion and acts of kindness, and introduced themes that I hope to continue in this. I was expecting somewhat more....paranormal romance tropes, but it is developed pretty intriguingly. So far, I found it more engaging and worth investing into than, say, The Dresden Files which I'm going to read too. Not to compare, but I was more wrapped into Mercy Thompson's story than Harry Dresden, though Briggs and Butcher are doing a lot of different work. All the same, there's a lot of goodness here.
I expected to dislike some of the characters, like Samuel and Adam, but I ended up really digging them. I especially loved Warren and Kyle as a werewolf/human gay couple that are involved in the plot and how she handles these characters. I also love how she handles the antagonists and the reveals of the story as well. Overall, I found it to be very unexpected and playing with, and against, tropes in good ways. It's a 4.5 for me, not perfect, but hardly bad at all and was quite excellent to me. I was shocked but I did find the beginning to meander a bit, but by the end I was pretty gripped by it and found it supremely enjoyable.
