Always and Forever, Lara Jean
by Jenny Han
I just realized I never wrote a full review on this one... But, 4/5 stars, definitely a favorite of mine of the three books. This is semi-spoiler free so be warned!
I thought that the plot developed really nicely. We got to see more of Lara Jean's goals and concerns outside of Peter Kavinsky and all of the drama that comes with dating one of the more popular guys of the school after a messy breakup with his long time girlfriend who happens to run the school. There was a lot more complexity, with her focusing on school, her family, and her friends. I loved seeing a side of Lara Jean that really put her all into her father's happiness and struggled with the plan she's always had for herself vs what life wanted her to do.
I also really loved the fact that we see a lot more of her family in this last book. They were all really invested in what happens to her in college, how they were going to make do with Margo abroad and Lara Jean going out of state where's it's considerably more expensive. I also loved that we had a focus on their father and how he needs to be happy too after putting so much time and effort into the girls that he seemingly forgot about himself. I enjoyed seeing Margo act out, as messed up as that sounds. Throughout the books, we've only seen her be this figure to go to, this mother figure that the girls love and go to when they need help or extra parenting. So, to see her act out and be visibly upset over the fact that her father moved on from their mother and fell in love, all with her not in the picture as she was abroad, was so interesting to read about and very jarring. But, I thought it was needed to show a lot of complexity to her character.
My biggest qualm with this book was the same thing from the past two books. A lot of the problems, insecurities, etc, be it relationship, platonic or familial were left largely untouched. Which was a problem to me. I wanted to see a lot of these insecurities (Lara Jean with her relationship with Peter, Peter and Lara Jean's previous crushes, Margo and her father's new romance) to close out during the series. However, they weren't. And I thought that it left the series kind of unfinished.
My last problem was the ending. I understood the idea of a full circle with their relationship, but it felt like it took a step back from all of their progress in the second book. Which was frustrating.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book and the series!
