Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin

4.0

i loved tomorrow x3 so much so i had high hopes going into this one & it reminded me just how much i love Gabrielle’s writing.

this book is about Naomi, who slips and falls down stairs outside her school and loses the last 4 years of her memory. she knows she is adopted, she remembers her primary school teachers, she knows who her parents are, but she can’t remember her best friends, her parents divorce, who her boyfriend is, why she doesn’t like her dads fiancé, and why she loves photography. all she knows is that she’s woken up in an ambulance with the boy who found her, and has no idea of who she is or who she wanted to become.

Naomi understandably struggles with fitting back into her life, and feels like a stranger in her own body. the only thing that feels constant and comfortable to her is her best friend, Will. as she slowly tries to learn what sort of person she is, she starts to grow as a brand-new person.

this book does an amazing job at portraying a person who is lost and directionless, and is so realistic. the characters are flawed, damaged, some are unlikeable, but that’s what makes this book so real. Naomi is unsure of how to live her life and i really enjoyed going on this journey with her as she grapples with new challenges, love interests, and trying to decide whether you really are that version of yourself in the past or whether to start anew.

the book touches on a lot of important themes - mental health, friendships, family relations, and grief - and really reminded me of what it’s like to be a teenager and trying to figure out who you are. this is definitely a memorable read and one i’d recommend to anyone, especially if you enjoyed tomorrow x3
