Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica

dark tense medium-paced

4.0

This book is so bizarre that it speaks loudly about what we have all become; these gruesome animals. A world where humanity counts as an endangered phenomenon and its people cease to argue with this. Bazterrica with her novel bashes the society and its regulations.

It speaks loudly about various things that have gone wrong in the world. Whether in terms of following the norms set by society or the lies fed to the public by the government, humanity has gone blind and it's a darn shame that it failed to distinguish between what is right and wrong. A commentary upon society of how the public wholeheartedly accepts the totalitarian reign in exchange for their freedom and rights. Living in a submissive capitalist world is scary where anytime, anything can go wrong, where the government is no longer reliable (basically corrupt) creating a terror among people to dictate them. A propaganda, an agenda whatever you can name. A true horror. A true dystopia.

Aside from these thoughts, the book also, at the same time, falls short to emphasize upon these issues. It was basically very straightforward rather than using its potential complexity. Whenever it comments upon the above themes it was just too straightforward and one-liners. The gory aspects sometimes seem unnecessary and the whole description of how things work in Part One of the book basically feels pointless. It has its potential, but the narrative is way too simple. Maybe it is all just a slice of life story of a person in the dystopian era that remains righteous and reasonable until at the end he also loses his sanity and becomes the person he despises the most.

This book is a new experience for me, maybe that is the reason why I kinda liked it and the idea behind it. I need to read more books about capitalism and socialism etc. But for a beginner's guide this book is good.
