Rebel Witch
by Kristen Ciccarelli
medium-paced
4 March 2025: 0.25 stars
Lowered rating before the romanticisation of self-harm and self-harm scars is inexcusable. Especially, in a YA book with impressionable readers.
25 February 2025: 2.5 stars
This was marginally better than book one, but I still didn't like it. I only read it because my library gave this to me on the day of release, and that's never happened before.
I still just can't get over how much this book romanticises self-harm and self-harm scars. I think it's quite irresponsible. I know in fantasy sometimes blood is necessary for a spell, but it's usually rare and during a climax, but this series... It truly feels like this book set out to trigger people. And, as far as I'm aware, there is not even a single trigger warning and hotline given in the beginning of the book. Even if the cutting isn't "self-harm," it's much to close to it.
Very disappointing.
