I've seen this book recommended multiple times, and I wasn't disappointed. I love Gemma. She has a mental toughness that makes her so intriguing. She is the definition of turning lemons into lemonade. However, despite her inner strength she's filled with kindness. She puts others before herself again and again. The way that Hope describes the universe is fascinating. I enjoyed the descriptions of the different types of aliens and planets. Although I didn't like Simon at first, he eventually grew on me. As the story develops, we observe Simon's fierce protectiveness over Gemma. As their relationship developed, Simon proved to be a physical and emotional support for Gemma on multiple occasions. He's definitely not a human like alien. The physical and cultural differences between Simon and Gemma are a big theme in the book.
I hope we get a glimpse of their lives on the new planet in the next book so that we can delve deeper into these conflicts
. If you like the grumpy sunshine trope, you'll probably like this.
