The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys

5.0

The Fountains of Silence begins in 1957 in Madrid, Spain. It is years after the Spanish Civil War and Spain is under the dictatorship of Franco. But there’s a horrific secret that was being hidden and that secret impacted the lives of so many.

Let me tell you, this book was gripping! The author succeeded in portraying two sides of Spain at that time: the luscious, beautiful country of sunshine and wine contrasted with the reality of the lives of many of the local people – that of control, silence, and struggle.

Sepetys once again crafted a phenomenal historical fiction novel. It is a page-turner! It is rich in detail with vivid descriptions. The story is told with great compassion. It is powerful, insightful, heartbreaking, and evocative.
