Up from Slavery by Booker T. Washington
3.0

Pretty much required reading. Moving and informative in places, slow and tiresome in others. Washington is a complicated figure, in some ways amazingly talented and admirable, in others incredibly frustrating. I used to teach some selections from this and had always wanted to read the entire thing. I think my opinion of Washington has suffered somewhat from the effort, though I still recommend anyone unaware of him and his work become more familiar with both.
