One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
5.0
I keep trying to describe this book without just repeating the synopsis. But, to be honest, the synopsis works fine. So if you want to know the basic concept of the story, go read that.

But it's a really good one. It's a pretty straight forward story about a girl who enters foster care because of her parent's really bad choices and the family--the Murphys--who open their home and hearts.
Ms. Hunt manages to tell a story that's 100% child appropriate but also deep enough for adults. There's no sugar coating. I mean, are there tough cases in foster care than Carley Connors? Sure. But Carley isn't supposed to be a hard case.
I was intrigued by how the author depicted her perception of her mother--her concept of "normal" and her love for her mother tinting her growing-up years with rose colored glasses and picking the good moments out of a hard life. Equally intriguing was Carley's slow transition to recognizing how different life could be and how that helped her acknowledge her mother's shortcomings. Eventually, I think, she comes to being able to recognize both the good and the bad instead of seeing only one or the other.
Another point of interest in this story was the ending. I won't give it away, but it manages to be a good ending without being an expected or "fairy tale" ending. It's real. It's hopeful. It's not neat and nice and tied up with a perfect bow.
