What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez
3.0
adventurous mysterious medium-paced

I'm disappointed in this book. For some reason I expected really good writing and a beautiful, intricate story full of history and magic. Instead, this story feels largely underdeveloped.

I was drawn in by the magic system. Old items imbued with lingering magic is right up my alley! Yet this barely gets explored and what we do get of this magic was not nearly as intriguing as it could have been.

The plot was... okay. I won't say it was entirely predictable but it wasn't hard to pick up on when a twist was about to occur.

None of the characters are particularly likeable, so it's hard to care about the story. I think there was potential here, but the characters and ideas just weren't properly developed. It's such a shame because there are so many exciting elements that could have been great but weren't given the proper care.

The cliffhanger ending has me almost wanting to read the next book but I can just about imagine what happens and I honestly don't think I'd like the book enough to finish it, let alone buy it.
