Nothing in My Heart by Peri Elizabeth Scott
4.0
I was in a mood for a angsty romance with a good grovel after the disaster that was my last read. I needed something to wash the horrible taste in my mouth and this did the job perfectly. It did help that this was similar to Natasha Ander’s The Unwanted Wife. (But maybe I am just due for a reread!)
Grace Langdon loved Beckett Kilmer from the moment she saw him at a business event. He was charming, kind, and swept her right off her feet. But a birth control mishaps leaves her pregnant. Their fathers decide to seize this chance and unite their business empires by forcing Beckett to marry Grace. Beckett feels trapped into marrying Grace and grows cold and resentful of her. Though when she loses the baby, he’s kind and supportive, but remains distant. Believing the man she once loved is gone, Grace decides to leave him. Only Beckett has come to senses and wants to make amends. Is it too late? Or could she find it in her heart to forgive him and give their marriage another chance?
Thank god this actually had a heroine with a backbone, who stood up against the wrongs done to her by those she loved. At the same time Grace didn’t come off as rude. I liked how we got to see her hesitate while coming to trust Beckett and love him again.
I liked how Beckett saw how his neglect and regard of Grace’s feelings destroyed the marriage they could’ve had. I liked how he accepted his wrongs as his own, not blaming anyone else, and actually repented. And once he made his mind up to woo her back, I liked how he went about fixing his marriage. He was supportive, encouraging, yet patient and understanding of Grace. By the end, even I had forgiven him and fallen for him.
I liked the inclusion of their friends, Charity and Kamil, and how they helped and supported Grace and Beckett respectively. I also liked how they were characters in their own right, well fleshed out with their own lives, wants, and conflicts.
I did feel the story ended abruptly, but overall I really enjoyed this. Would recommend if you like the marriage in trouble trope with a good grovel!
